Translation of a Point Task Cards

Geometry transformations are challenging concept. These Translation of a Point Task Cards help students learn how to translate points on a coordinate plane and write the algebraic rules. Includes translations on one-quadrant graphs and four-quadrant graphs. Answer Key shows both algebraic rules and descriptions of the translations that occur.
My students always struggle with writing the algebraic rule for any of the transformations. Actually, that is why I created my line of Geometric Transformation products! It starts students off by looking at what is happening to the point as it shifts around the coordinate plane. I have then describe in words: “Does it go left or right? Up or down?” Then we look to see what is happening to the ordered pair from the pre-image to the image. “What do you notice?” From there, we talk about how the algebraic rule is the shorthand for our description! And the Helpful Hints Mini-Poster (included in this resource) helps remind students of that.

These Translation of a Point Task Cards are a print resource.

The 12 task cards and “Helpful Hints” page can be printed. (See below for my best practice!) This works great as a fast-finisher activity or part of the lesson!

Why implement task cards over a worksheet?

Currently, I use task cards in my class almost every day! My favorite part about them is this: Once you have them, they are prepped and ready to go at a moment’s notice. I laminate them and keep them in Michael’s photo boxes. If we finish class with 5 minutes to spare, pull out a task card! Have students work on it individually or in pairs. They are versatile and ready for any occasion.
