Ways to Easily Scaffold Geometric Transformations for Better Understanding

Check out the full episode on how I scaffold Geometric Transformations.

Summary of the Episode

Scaffolding geometric transformations can be extremely beneficial if you have students who are currently struggling with on-grade level math.

1. Identifying Each Transformation

Start off with students identifying which transformations are which. I use these “slang” terms to help students better understand the academic vocabulary.

Translation  –  Slide

Reflection  –  Flip

Rotation  –  Turn

Dilation  – Large and Tiny

2. Translations

Start off with a single point on a 1 quadrant graph, doing a single movement. Add two movements, 4 quadrant graphs, then shapes. Create the algebraic rule by looking at the coordinates.

3. Reflections

Practice identifying reflections over the x-axis versus the y-axis. Use mirrors, tracing paper, and counting spaces from the line of reflection.

4. Rotations

Do not be like me and wait four years before using tracing paper when teaching rotations. It is a life saver and makes teaching them so much easier.
