Podcasts for Math Teachers

Math Teacher Podcasts

I want you to think about this: When you watch a movie or tv show, what qualities grasp your attention, emotions, and leave you wanting more?

Probably the ones that feel real.  Not necessarily the concepts, but how the actors…well act. It seems like they are truly a part of the story and we are given the honor of overserving them.

It’s no wonder then that the podcasts I gravitate to are the ones where they feel like conversations rather than scripts. Without further ado, here are my go-to math teacher podcasts.

1. Solving for the Undefined

Hey! That one sounds familiar. Solving for the Undefined Podcast is my podcast that I started in February of 2021. I started this math teacher podcast as a way to share math teacher-y things that improved the quality of education for my students.

Podcast Description:

Solving for the Undefined is here to develop your intrigue for math and learning while helping teachers do the same for their students. When our host, Johanna, became a teacher, she found herself alone, creating her own activities, and to find ways to make math fun plus easy to implement…but it wasn’t exactly a piece of pi (or cake!).

She’s on a mission to solve those problems for teachers and show students just how awesome math can be! On Monday’s you’ll hear from teachers, professionals and students on their own journey, who use math in their everyday lives. And that’s what you can count on!

2. Making Math Moments That Matter

I started listening to this duo’s podcast back in March when I first learned about Building Thinking Classrooms by Peter Liljedahl. Kyle and Jon keep this format in mind when they share their expertise.

Their episodes are packed with goodness that will truly ignite your math classroom!

Podcast Description:

Wondering how to create a classroom culture where students don’t want to stop exploring mathematics when the bell rings? Kyle Pearce from TapIntoTeenMinds.com and Jon Orr from MrOrr-IsAGeek.com team up to uncover how we can Make Math Moments That Matter for every student in the math classroom from Kindergarten through Grade 12. Discover how you can build easy to plan and fun to deliver math lessons that kids will not only love, but also learn from using the Making Math Moments That Matter 3-Part Framework. Get ready to learn as we interview math education influencers, engage in coaching calls with mathematics educators from around the world, and take deep dives into assessment, differentiation, student behaviour, engagement, problem solving, math fact fluency, and many other common teacher challenges as we strive to Make Math Moments That Matter. Let’s learn how we can meet the needs of every learner in all classrooms regardless of student readiness together!

3. Math is Figure-out-able

One thing I love about this podcast is the emphasis on reasoning over algorithms. I’ve always felt that blindly teaching algorithms does a disservice to students on their journey to deep understanding.

Pam and Kim regularly walk through math problems and share how they solved them.

This podcast is a great addition to your weekly line up.

Podcast Description:

Math teacher educator Pam Harris and her cohost Kim Montague answer the question: If not algorithms, then what? Join them for ~15 minutes every Tuesday as they cast their vision for mathematics education and give actionable items to help teachers teach math that is Figure-Out-Able.

4. More Math for More People

I stumbled upon this podcast because my school uses CPM for our accelerated math 8 program!

The hosts, Joel and Misty, provide 30 minute unique episodes. They are personable, engaging, and informative.

Podcast Description:

CPM Educational Program is a non-profit publisher of math textbooks for grades 6-12. As part of its mission, CPM provides a multitude of professional learning opportunities for math educators. The More Math for More People podcast is part of that outreach and mission. Published biweekly, the hosts, Joel Miller and Misty Nikula, discuss the CPM curriculum, trends in math education and share strategies to shift instructional practices to create a more inclusive and student-centered classroom. They also highlight upcoming CPM professional learning opportunities and have conversations with math educators about how they do what they do. We hope that you find the podcast informative, engaging and fun.
